Sensi

Sensi – Contemporary dining amidst opulence

The Bellagio hotel is known for its grandeur and opulence.  The luxury hotel experience is incomplete without a visit to one of its AAA Five Diamond-awarded restaurant.

We picked Sensi for its contemporary and inviting water-featured entrance and bar – not to mention its inviting list of cocktails.  Settling for the Perfect Stormrum, house-made ginger ale, and orange bitters – and the Sensi Sidecarcognac, cointreau, fresh passionfruit puree and fresh lemon juice – were the perfect start to a lovely night.

Since one wasn’t always in Las Vegas or at the Bellagio, we decided to treat ourselves to the Sensi Pre Fixe menu with accompanying wines.

First off the menu was the Surf & Turf Beef Carpaccio – crisp lobster knuckles, mustard dressing and roasted mushrooms – with a glass of Arneis, Ceretto, Piemonte, Italy, 2007.  The corny name for the dish quickly redeemed itself.  Though the beef carpaccio was a bit too thickly cut for our liking, it was fresh and juicy!  The lobster knuckles however won us over.  Perfectly cooked, it was tender with the right *bounce* and sweet and juicy – simply divine!

Beef Carpaccio and Crisp Lobster Knuckles

For mains, we picked the Kobe Flat Iron Steak – with tater tots, ice-wine glazed shallots and salsa verde – accompanied with a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon, Volker Eisele, Napa Valley 2005; and the Porcini crusted Alaskan Halibut – with roasted fall vegetables, truffled macaroni and red wine pancetta sauce – with a glass of Pinot Noir, Willakenzie, Willamette Valley Oregon 2006.

The Kobe steak was perfectly cooked – it was tender and full of flavour.  The fish was wonderful too – superb crispy skin and tender flesh.

"Chocolate Temptation" with Tawny Port

Dessert was amazing and aptly named the Chocolate temptation – layers of silky milk chocolate, nuts and praline with salted caramel ice-cream and crisp garnishes – delicately washed down with Fonseca 20 year, tawny port.   The soft crusty base of the hazelnut and mixed nuts is the perfect bed for the soft chocolate caramel, which sits on it.  Topped with the salted caramel ice-cream, it was the perfect note to end on.
