Eamon’s Dublin Chipper – Funky ‘fish and chips’ in Old Town Alexandria

Not your typical fish and chips shop but one that sort of injects a bit of funk into a fish shop with its chandeliers and gold-trimmed black-board – I like it.  It’s a small shop with only about four tables and a bar with a few stools – cosy.

Nothing fancy about it but fresh and nicely fried fish with its signature “Secret Seven” sauces to go with it – tartar, Marie Rose, Chesapeake, hot chilli, Kitty O’Shea, Fronch and curry.  The battered cod is crisp on the outside but moist and flavourful.  The chips were fantastically thick cut and yum!  Douse ‘em with vinegar or ketchup or any of the ‘Secret Seven’ sauces, and you’ll be fighting for the last chip!

Our friend, the local, suggested hot chilli and curry.  It was not disappointing but the curry was a bit-too-from-the-‘packet’-for-me – sorta like the kind of Indian curry you get in a pack but that’s just me…lots of other people love it…  If you’re adventurous, the sauces do go well with the fish and the (two large!) chips we ordered.  If you prefer traditional flavourings like me, you won’t be disappointed either as vinegar or ketchup is available.

If you aren’t feeling too ‘fried up’ by the end try the Fried Sweets” – Milky Way/Snickers/Mars bars (!), as well as bananas and dough balls.  We were told we should try that the next time – hmm….

Don’t forget to wash it all down with a draft.
